Objective and Subjective Items in Diagonal Pair

Postby Geoff1975 » May 25, 2014 9:53 am

Hi,
I looked through the Theme Browser to see if the Objective and Subjective items remain consistent. By this, I mean, each dynamic pair would have an Objective variation and a Subjective variation. The Objective would be in top position (diagonally) and Subjective being in the bottom.

This is puzzling. Sometimes the Subjective is top. Example: Self Interest (top) and Morality (bottom). Sometimes the Objective is top. Example: Situation (top) and Circumstances (bottom).

I'm not quite sure how you are determining what is an Objective item and what is a Subjective item in your examples. Is this referencing something Melanie has written on her site?

I was reading through this posting:

Code: Select all

where you were mentioning the difference between two variations (Rationalization and Obligation) is perspective. "From the inside, it looks like one. From the outside, it looks like another." I think I understood what you meant by one being an external justification and the other being internal.

So Self-Interest could be seen as internal because it's only what one person wants. Morality could be external because it applies to a majority of people. Situation could be seen externally because there's no subjective interpretation required. Circumstances might follow the pattern as an interpretation dependent on people's subjective opinions of what's going on. I can see some link with an overall pattern at the Class level where you have the upper two (Situation and Activity) being external and the lower two (Manipulation and Attitude) being internal and dependent on subjectivity.

Perhaps "context" is more accurate than "perspective." The inside/outside context does not readily apply to items in the Dramatica structure, whereas it does apply to the four throughline perspectives (MC/IC, OS/SS).
