Giving the MC a musical talent

Postby RobertS » Nov 24, 2013 12:37 pm

As currently written, my MC is an excellent guitarist from 20 years earlier, but his aspirations were stomped out. A main reason the catalyst character chooses him is because of his musical talent. The story is really not about music, but rather, it creates a connection between him and the catalyst character.

Is it unreasonable to make him gifted musically?

I think it's reasonable. The question for you is whether being gifted musically is storytelling or more related to the story's underlying storyform? If it is storytelling, then it is part of the character's description or activities and does not have any special meaning--it just adds texture and color to the character. If it's tied to why the Influence Character has an impact on the MC, then you should consider how this appear in the storyform.

Ok, I'll ponder that. The talent has an arc, to a previous time, that explains why this influenced the influence character.
