IC: "Do as I say, not as I do"
Here's an interesting challenge I'm coming across in the story I'm working on. As I've posted here before, my protagonist is the Steadfast IC. My main character is for all intent and purposes the Change Sidekick. The Sidekick main character's problem/solution is Protection/Inaction, and as I've also...

embroidery exercise
Chris,
how did the embroidery exercise work in terms of how people edited it? I'd like to do that with some of the people on here, if they're interested.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Change MC - Bad
Sounds to me like you're on the right track there. One of the things I struggled with when I first started reading and using Dramatica was the "redefinition" of words to mean subtly different things than they mean in daily discourse. But as you say here, once I grasped that the new definit...

Re: Story Drivers, Signposts, and Journeys
I think your confusion comes from the fact that the chart from the book you show is a visually "condensed" version of the plot sequence chart from the software, since it doesn't include blocks for the journeys but rather shows them as little dotted lines. In the chart from the book, the te...

Re: MC problem = LACK of Reaction
I found the answer to my question, from the Dramatica book:
So the Solution to my character's lack of Reaction is more Proaction.
For example, the Solution for too much or too little logic is more or less feeling.
So the Solution to my character's lack of Reaction is more Proaction.

MC problem = LACK of Reaction
I've been playing around with a particular storyform, and ended up with my MC's problem being REACTION and solution being PROACTION. But when I read the Throughlines report, I find this: Unfortunately, Antonio's lack of Reaction is what gets him into trouble. In fact, this imbalance causes trouble f...

Thanks, I'll have to take a look at that over the weekend. Been ages since I've seen it.

contemplation as a consequence?
GOAL: The Present REQUIREMENTS: How Things are Changing FOREWARNINGS: Playing a Role CONSEQUENCE: Contemplation I've mulled over this one for some time. Contemplation is defined within Dramatica as "present considerations". But somehow a "consequence" of not achieving the goal si...

main story and sub-story merge at climax?
Chris et al: I have read with interest the advise on sub-story in the Tips of the Month section, as I am also using one in my novel. One "Tip" uses the example of Han Solo's and Jaba the Hutt's sub-story as a way of breaking the deadlock between Luke and Han regarding the princess ("s...

Re: Dramatica is a tool, not a decree
I was just scrolling through the tips of the day, and came across this post from 2004. I was tickled to see I had used the same hammer and nail analogy:

Order of MC & IC Signposts
Chris, being now quite a way into my story, I've gone back to read the beginning, and realize I have an opportunity to create some mystery and tension around my MC -- but this would involve putting my Signposts 1 in the order OS - IC - MC - SS. I do understand that putting the IC "on stage"...

Re: Deciding on Thoughtlines
Since you are unclear about the throughline, you might consider answer some of the other questions that you do have answers to first, about your main and impact characters, some of the questions about the OS. Or you could start with the Plot Progression screen and answer some of the questions there ...

Re: DRAMATICA - OS THROUGHLINE OPTIONS
Yes, I've also had some very powerful "ah ha!" moments using the software. For example, after answering a number of questions, my MC's Problem/Solution pair became Protection/Inaction. So at the climax of the MC throughline, he must realize that the thing he must do is "nothing"....

Dramatica is a tool, not a decree
I know from my own experience working with Dramatica, as well as so many of the other posts I see here, that there is a tendency to look at the story form Dramatica ends up giving you as some sort of decree as to how your story is supposed to go. And please understand I am saying this to myself as m...

Re: DRAMATICA - OS THROUGHLINE OPTIONS
Yes, I've experienced this confusion -- and frustration -- myself. Of course if you want Fixed Attitude and/or Manipulation, you should start with those. Otherwise if the be-er/logical combination is more important, keep those and see where the theory takes you. Remember that just because the MC is ...

the movie Deja Vu (Denzel Washington)
Chris, I'm wondering if you are familiar with this film (maybe you've already commented on it somewhere). It's a very good movie, and I have a strong suspicion it was written using Dramatica. The characters even argue at one point explicity about Fate vs. Destiny, which is the point where I stopped ...

Re: Theme relevance
There's some insight there for sure. Thank you. It seems to me like there's some mysterious mathematical magic going on in how Dramatica figures out what elements go where, and this magic is not easily understood. I confess that as I put my story together, the pieces do seem to fit. It's oddly disc...
