Applying Dramatica to a Story Arc TV Series
V: The Series was a favorite from my youth. It still holds up by the way. Because there's a clear over arcing story, I was applying Dramatica to it. The theory still applies. I don't know if you've ever seen it, but here's what I got. The alien visitors are the antagonists, the Human resistance figh...

One Way To Understand Be-er
I'd like to share this image of the Be-er approach. Many times, Chris has emphasized that Be-er and Doer approach is not the same as active and passive, although some movies really make this distinction difficult. A Be-er, as I understand it, modifies himself or his mind to match the environment. A ...

Re: Approach
Personally, if it were up to me, I wouldn't structure the Theory book so linearly from the stand point of steps a writer would take in a story. It appears that way. I would preface the book by inviting the reader to jump around the book, absorbing what's clear. The first chapter would explain the dy...

Re: Plot sequence report / theme
Good question. I hope I interpret your question correctly. I think "Mental Relativity" is what's going on here. Like a throughline's Concern is one Type, yet linearly you go through four signposts, from the standpoint of each Act signpost, you explore these four variations. You stand on on...

Re: Approach
It's very rewarding once you get the hang of it. I started this past Spring and listened to as many podcasts (analyzing movies with it) on Dramatica.com as possible. In some sense, that's a faster way of learning it than the guide in the package. Those discussions bring up the principles repeatedly....

Re: Trying to Integrate the Justification Steps Into Through
You mentioned the justification levels are worked into the signposts already. After watching Notting Hill and Get Smart, I did notice moments when Situation seemed to be in one Act, Commitment was in an Act, etc. If I look at the Manipulation domain at rest and then match the quad locations with tho...

Re: Trying to Integrate the Justification Steps Into Through
Hope I'm not being too persistent. "Bringing Up Baby" and "Who's That Girl?" are my models, so I'm trying to see the process of David's justifications collapsing like the dinosaur skeleton. I'll see them again with the four levels of justification in mind to see if I can spot them.

Re: Trying to Integrate the Justification Steps Into Through
Thanks. Your mention of Acts helped clue me in on what decides those signpost orders. One podcast which really washed some of the fog out of my eyes was "Breakfast at Tiffany's" because it mentioned the start of the IC's drive. The inciting incident of his throughline, I guess, begins when...

Re: Could "You And I Are Alike" Crop Up Halfway Through Stor
Listening to a podcast about "Crazy, Stupid, Love", it occurred to me the placement of the "You and I Are Alike" might be influenced to some degree by the strength of the impact on the change character. I thought back to that model of one rising and one lowering. They might be al...

Trying to Integrate the Justification Steps Into Throughline
Intellectually, I know in a story where the IC is making an effort to change the MC, not necessarily consciously, the IC would be the IC's efforts as seen externally. The MC would show the change. The RS would show the cause and effect, I guess. I'm trying to integrate the justification process into...

Can You Have Character Cast Based on Mind Domain Arrangement
In trying to figure out the pattern of the rotating 16 elements within each quad, I took into consideration the simple OS characters: protagonist, contagonist, etc. Their decision and action traits seem to mimic how the elements are placed in the Situation/Universe domain. Pursuit is the upper left ...

DUG Movie Suggestions
The Dramatica Users Group schedule of movies, I imagine, fills up quickly, but here are some suggestions: 1. Ed Wood (directed by Tim Burton)(interesting male bonding throughline for the RS?) 2. Tin Cup (perhaps clear throughlines developed further than typical romances) 3. a Seinfeld episode (how i...

Applying the Storymind Theory to Seinfeld
Before discovering Dramatica, I would have fun trying to find common a theme in the four Seinfeld story lines of an episode. Seinfeld practically screamed out for this because: 1) it was so dialogue witty, and 2) themes were clearly a focus of the comedy. What does Dramatica say about the division b...

Could "You And I Are Alike" Crop Up Halfway Through Story?
Is there a structural place in the "You and I Are Alike" moment? I thought about how the Steadfast character rises up during the justification process, building up limitations. The Change character would, during the story, go in reverse... having justifications be torn down. These are in t...

IC Resolve and RS Driver?
I read in Melanie's article, "How We Did It!", posted in Dramaticapedia.com about how the flips and rotates of justification are determined for MC by MC's Resolve and those same can be determined for OS by the Story Driver. I've read, out of necessity, these two throughlines were the best ...

Question: Applying Justification Levels to My Story
Hello, I am thrilled with Melanie and Chris having come up with a way to define steadfast and change character growth instead of just making them be one-note. In a tape cassette lecture series, they explained the four levels of justification... which are different between steadfast and change. My qu...

Alternate Ego As IC In "The Associate"?
"The Associate" with Whoopie Goldberg presents an interesting possibility. I'm watching it now for the first time since learning Dramatica. She plays a character who impersonates a fictional person, a man, in order to gain success. Her outlook seems to change, so maybe this alternate ego i...

Different Take On "The Descendants"
While listening to the Users Group podcast about "The Descendants", I found some of my interpretations differed from Chris'. George Clooney as a MC had a good example as a Be-er at the beginning when the daughter was called to task for mocking her classmate. Rather than externalize the con...

One Drastic Way Dramatica Helped Me
One of the most pronounced ways Dramatica helped me was in helping me discover I had written too much plot. I would notice movies had a goal for the main character which was separate from the overall story. There were character arc plots as I saw them. So, I like writing movies which are involving.....
