Re: MC as Antagonist - any examples please?
After all this talk about "Double Indemnity" I had to dig it out and watch it...I got the honeysuckle line wrong: "I could still remember the smell of honeysuckle all along that street. How could I have known that murder can sometimes smell like honeysuckle."

Re: MC as Antagonist - any examples please?
Hi Nigel, I think you might be forgetting that Protagonist and Antagonist are structural roles -- who is the good guy and who is the bad guy isn't relevant to their definition as Protagonist and Antagonist. As you know the MC is the character from whose perspective the story is being told, whether o...

Re: Overall Story characteristics??
OK, I'm almost with you.
I guess what is unclear to me is which of the characteristics (motivation, etc) are subjective and which are objective? Or is that up to me?

I think I now understand that you mean their functional importance is defined in terms of those characteristics... but I'm still not sure why.

Overall Story characteristics??
Chris, I just came across a passage in the Dramatica book that suddenly has me confused (I've read it several times, so am not sure why it took this long for me to get confused by it). In the section "Storyforming Structural Story Points" you discuss how the main and impact characters func...

Re: Help with Impulsive Responses
Wow, really terrific and huge question! Although maybe you could get more specific. For example, you say "If he had Tourette’s Syndrome for example..." which leads me to think that isn't the real problem. If it is, a concern of Impulsive Responses would make perfect sense. On the other han...

Re: How to Understand Impact Character Signposts?
Hi Prodos, boy, have I struggled with this issue as well. But yes, I think you're right about "B". The impact character's purpose (dramatica-lly speaking) is always to affect, influence, change the main character. But then there is the "relationship" between them (the SS throughl...

Check out this page: http://dramatica.com/theory/index.html I'd also recommend -- strongly -- that you get the book. You can download it free on that page as a PDF file, as well, but I believe that is not the most up to date version. It is also available from Amazon for the Kindle. Jeff

Re: Forgiveness
You're welcome, hope it helps. By the way, a good place to just play and experiment with this idea is the Story Engine screen. And of course the questions I posed for each Concern were just examples of a thousand different ways to address that Concern, again, it just depends on what matters to you w...

Re: Forgiveness
Hi Peter, I think Chris would tell you, as he did me in this post from a while back: http://forums.screenplay.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1958 that "forgiveness" is a thematic subject, and can be approached from any of the thousands of storyforms in the way that best suits your purpose. S...

Re: IC as antagonist issue
Ah, OK. Hm.... I must have dreamed that then.... it occurred to me after making this post that it is was fine, since there is no real antagonist in part 1, only the impact character moving in that direction.
Thanks.
Thanks.

IC as antagonist issue
Chris, I am using a thinned down storyform for part 1 of my novel, which contains a lot of back story but does play a role in the overall plot -- and then part 2 is a full-fledged storyform. (Part 3 is mostly just denouement). The MC-Protagonist and IC in part 1 become IC-Protagonist and Antagonist,...

Re: basic question
According to the theory, yes -- to make a full Grand Argument, all elements and variations must be present.

Re: do i use all 64 variations and 64 elements
Hey,
no, you can't get them all into a short story. If you want to write a Grand Argument Story (as Dramatica calls it) you really are talking about a full-length novel or screenplay.
The book does have a section on how to encorporate the Dramatica idea into short stories.

Re: obligation vs. rationalization
Chris, not sure if you're still answering question to this archive forum, but... would it be safe to say, then, that this inside/outside perspective applies to all dynamic pairs? I've been spending a lot of time with the book again but don't remember this point being made anywhere.

Who would like to do a Dramatica embroidery exercise?
I'd like to get a few people to take part in an embroidery exercise -- but even if only one other person wants to do it, I'm game. I was looking for a way to put the file somewhere that everyone could have access to it, but since decided it would make more sense to manage this just through email. I'...

Re: IC: "Do as I say, not as I do"
Thanks. After posting this I feel a little embarrassed. The counter-argument (in this case, inaction) can be presented in a hundred different ways from any character at all. But the impact character embodies it. The fact that he is lying (as I said, he's prepping the MC for Proaction) isn't relevant...
