Re: Playing A Role

Changing One's Nature--Everyone is concerned transforming themselves (or NOT transforming themselves) or transforming someone else. For example, transforming unmotivated Gen Y young adults into political activists. Developing a Plan--Everyone is concerned with coming up with a plan (or NOT coming up...

Re: Character Chessboard Confusion

There is an inherent pattern in the quad structure. Position has meaning. The four throughlines share the same element labels. The difference comes from the pairings of dynamic pairs. The Chess Set of 64 elements within a Class is broken into four Sets of 16 (which correspond to the four levels of c...

Re: Impact Character as Protagonist?

I sent this infomation to you privately but I'll post it here too since you asked in this forum. I don't think there are any inherent advantages or disadvantages having the Impact Character the protagonist, but here are some thoughts: -- It is unusual to have the IC the protagonist which can be good...

Re: Novel, Screenplay, or Short Story Template

The difference between the templates are the Scenes or Chapters created in the Storyweaving section of the Query System and StoryGuide. Each is pre-set with scenes or chapters appropriate to the form and include generalized instructions on what should be in each scene/chapter.

Re: Story Telling, Story Encoding or Story Illustrating

In Dramatica terms, Storytelling, Storyencoding, and Story Illustrating are the same. The different uses of the terms comes from the gradual modification of the Dramatica language over the past decade and a half. Note: Storytelling is a bit looser in definition than the other two. Depending on its u...

Re: Playing A Role

Vee -- Your use of "Playing a Role" fits well within its definition. Another term could be "pretending." such as your characters are concerned that pretending to be qualified is insufficient or problematic, even though they truly have the qualifications. Perhaps the circumstances...

Re: Story Outcome and Judgement

A Steafast Main Character grows in his resolve. Since he is steadfast, it is the changing environment (including the people who populate it) against which he must hold out. A Judgment of Good indicates he is at peace at the end of the story solely with regards to the personal issue with which the st...

Re: Story Outcome and Judgement

Story Outcome is related to the Protagonist since the protagonist is concerned with achieving the Story Goal. Story Judgment is related to the Main Character and is a judgment of whether or not the MC resolved his personal issue (Good) or is left angst-ridden (Bad). In stories where the Main Charact...

Re: Illustrating One's Story In Dramatica

I recommend sketching in your ideas but do not get bogged down illustrating them. Dramatica is good for collecting your thoughts, but many word processors are superior at weaving them together into a finished work. Besides, you may determine that you need to 'tweak' your storyform at a later point, ...

Re: Sub-Plot

While I wouldn't characterize the four throughlines as "subplots," per se, they do look like that from a traditional perspective on story. The reason I wouldn't characterize them that way is that all four throughlines are essential to a complete story, whereas sub-stories are often added t...

Re: 24 Scenes

Absolutely. Characters need not be present to have their effects demonstrated or interacted with others. Your court example illustrates this point well. It is the interaction of the ELEMENTS that is important, not the characters that embody them. That is why you can have "hand-offs" of cha...

Re: What happens when stories get smaller?

In Dramatica terms, the smallest "story" setup requires a quad (a noun, a verb, an adjective, and an adverb--"Dying dog barks defiantly"). Stories also contain time so they should include a progression of some sort ("Life sucks and then you die"). It requires at least o...

Re: OS Story Vs Subjective storyline

I couldn't agree with you more. Dramatica is best used when you are in an analytical mode. If you tend to be an organic writer where inspiration comes from endless possibilities, write first and use Dramatica after you have finished "creating" and are ready to figure out what it is that yo...

Re: Mental Sex -- Real Life Example(s)

I do NOT like the terms "Logical" and "Intuitive" as replacements for Male and Female Mental Sex. If one must use alternative labels, "Linear" and "Holistic" are closer. Examples of real world mental sex may be specific, but conceptually mental sex is necessar...

Mental Sex -- Real Life Example(s)

Dramatica user Uttam Narsu picked up on the following snippet from the web: Political observers frequently comment that there is little difference between Clinton and Obama on the issues, and certainly this is true. But by now it is also clear that the two candidates have very different political te...

Re: OS Story Vs Subjective storyline

The archetypes are a convenient set of character elements because they are internally and externally consistent. Complex characters are simpler or more complicated than archetypes because they are less "well-balanced" but often more interesting. The elements indicate what the characters' f...

When you create complex characters you are not limited to anything. You may choose to include elements from each level, or each quad, but that is your choice...nothing dictates that.

Re: OS Story Vs Subjective storyline

When you ask, "When the scene list refers to the protagonist-- I guess I can choose whether to use the Protagonist or the MC or both?", I assume you refer to the scenes as enumerated in one of the structure templates. If that is the case, then "yes," the structure templates are s...

Hi Kat --

We are figuring out how to archive the older archives. In any case we'll make sure they (or their contents) do not dissapear.

And yes, more audio book chapters are on the way...soon.

Cheers,
Chris
