Cursory Analysis: Short Circuit

After first thinking of Number Five as the MC, I think he is just the protagonist. We learn more about Stephanie's personal life with ex-boyfriend and don't learn about Number Five beyond the OS throughline. I see two RS's: one with Steph and Number Five, and one with Steph and Newton. Number Five w...

Steadfast & Change Character Intertwining Question

My list of driver events is coming along. I've been imagining how the pattern in terms of real problem and solution with symptom and response plays out. The steadfast character shares the same symptom and response as the OS; the change character shares the OS problem and solution. Also, I noticed th...

Re: Changing by deciding not to change?

Hey... interesting name. Each character can "sway" between their original course and the unfamiliar course. Basically they'd be conflicted. Ultimately, in the end of the story, when the problem is solved, if the character has solved the problem with the original course, then he's steadfast...

OS Problem and Options

Hi, I'd love to get answers from Chris on this, but this is open to anyone. 1. OS Problem - I used to assume the OS problem was expressed from a single source, probably the antagonist, and automatically expressed in the Act Turns. Now, I see it as expressed by the three or four [archetypal] characte...

I'd be using Movie Magic Screenwriter anyway. I could just that for the notes, too. Great!

Question: Using the StoryGuide

Hi, I'd appreciate any help with these two questions. How do I put in bits for the movie which aren't necessarily full scenes? I have ideas for bits, which is usually how my stories flesh out. Armando's suggestion in Dramatica For Screenwriters makes sense. I could list these bits on paper, then cat...

Anyone Know Arsenic and Old Lace?

I'm structuring a script and saw Arsenic and Old Lace. This was a pretty funny movie. Has anyone here seen it? Does anyone know it well enough to talk about how the plot lines fit into the OS? It seems there are several: getting Teddy committed, worrying about the sisters, and Johnny coming home. I ...

Interesting Limit Question: Wargames

Listening to the discussion about Time lock versus Option lock made me think about the moment before the climax in Wargames. They're all in the NORAD War Room watching the computer try to guess all the numbers of the secret code in order to launch the missiles. One by one numbers become guessed corr...

Re: Why They Don't Make Comedies Like They Use To

I'm glad you posted your respect about classic comedies. Talking about Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday especially hit home because I'm studying Dramatica in order to write something of that caliber.

Personal Writing Breakthrough Experience

Hi, I just wanted to mention what many writers probably encounter. The story I've been developing began inspired by a movie. The movie had several different plot threads or characters moving with their own goals. I wasn't sure whether it was too scattered. After studying Dramatica in depth, I focuse...

Re: Think I'm Noticing the Inhibitor

Instead of being the inhibitor, I'm starting to suspect what I was noticing were the different threads of the OS. I noticed this since spotting Breathless Mahoney as a clear Contagonist in Dick Tracy. This makes designing the OS even easier. It seems there are threads, the Contagonist, Antagonist, a...

Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Since watching this movie in 1988, my mind went to the dynamic character of the duo protagonists, Bill, played by Alex Winter. I kept with him and felt as though I were watching his friend, Ted, played by Keanu Reeves. Now, armed with Dramatica, I'm watching it again. This is odd. Twelve minutes int...

Funny Comment About Choosing Beer or Doer

Here's a funny phrase that comes to mind now and again. Something to be wary of. When figuring out Doer or Beer for a character, don't ignore the possibility the character probably doesn't make stupid decisions.

Optionlock and Bringing Up Baby... Huh?

I've caught the notes about how optionlocks work. With a certain defined goal, you have these options (or sometimes steps) to achieve it. Once these run out, the story crisis kicks in at the end. I've checked the story report for Bringing Up Baby. Okay, there are certain options David has to obtain ...

Requirements and Options

I've been wondering about options. Many times, do the prerequisites and requirement types indicate the kinds of options in a movie? For example, if the prerequisite and requirement is Gathering Information and Understanding, have you noticed the options will involve ways of doing that?

Thanks.

Thanks for that list, Chris. That is a useful link.

My IC is a steadfast character in Fixed Attitude. The comedic side of Ben Kenobi? Actually, Tootsie might be worth checking out again.

Think I'm Noticing the Inhibitor

Something very clear I'm noticing, I think, is the OS Inhibitor. Not to state anything firm about this structurally, but I have noticed it often shows up near the end of the third OS Signpost. I've also noticed this is affected/or affects the RS. In Star Trek IV, perhaps halfway through the third si...

Examples of Comedic Fixed Attitude

The guide enclosed with Dramatica lays out a nice way of regarding genre. My story is a comedy, so I'm experimenting with how to make all four throughlines be characterized in a comedic way. Situation is in the form of a sitcom (i.e. being stuck in a worldly situation being funny). Physical comedy i...

Thanks, Chris.
I thought of Star Wars Saturday and watched it. Coincidentally, they had The Karate Kid marathon later that day on television. Thanks for telling me how to work the filter. I looked for it, but couldn't find it before.

Wow! My story is unique on several levels. Any examples of Steadfast Beers and Change Doers? I keep running into the opposite.
