Re: Theme relevance

Chris, wouldn't it also be true that the theme of "Test" is present in many other places in the story, certainly in Luke Skywalker's throughline? His entire story is about being Tested, which comes to a climax during the final battle when he turns off his targeting computer and uses the Fo...

Re: Requirements: Known From the Beginning or Learned Later?

Chris may have more to say about this, but I believe that is up to you. Dramatica is simply saying that given the story form you've built, it simply must happen, not how. Look at where else in your story form "changing one's nature" appears as a thematic element, and it may give you some i...

Re: Question about disabled choices

Yeah, I think they probably did that because the way the interface of the app works (which is old and clunky) it's too easy to be editing the wrong file... so if WE decide to turn that option on, it's up to us to keep track of where we are! :-) Keep in mind that to open multiple files you have to do...

You can open multiple files at one time. Go to Edit->Preferences and check "file menu can open multiple stories".

Re: Question about disabled choices

The great thing about Dramatica is that it allows you to "drill into" your story from whatever direction you like. You can start by answering questions about your characters first, if your story is going to be more "character driven", or use the "Plot Progression" scree...

Plot Sequence and theme discrepancies

Chris, I've been reading through "Dramatica for Screenwriters", and it does seem to have some good "exercises" that apply not only to screenwriters. For example, for the signposts of the OS you might write an abstract such as: SIGPOSTS: The Present, How Things are Changing, The F...

Interesting article on Wikipedia about the making of the film. I had to laugh at the reference to the film being in "development hell". The section on the development is especially interesting...

Re: The movie "Contact"

Wow, great story about Dramatica being used... although I think they could have done a more thorough job of it. Thanks for correcting my spelling of "Skerritt" by the way (oops). I did understand that Palmer is the IC -- although he feels oddly not very "present" emotionally in m...

The movie "Contact"

Hi Chris, I'm wondering if you could reflect on the movie "Contact" with regards to the Dramatica theory. It's one of my favorite movies, but I also know that's because Jodie Foster does such a spectacular job through the film. It's a very "character driven" story, in that regard...

Re: Very late introduction of Impact character

Got it... part one isn't just back story, although there is a good deal of it there, but there is also plot progression. So in that case the alternative argument should be made "present" in some way in part one, and then the Impact Character comes to represent that argument directly in par...

Very late introduction of Impact character

Chris, I am well on my way with my novel, and am very grateful for how much Dramatica has helped me organize and think about my materials! One issue I'm a little concerned about is that my story is clearly falling into 3 distinct parts (I will likely even label them such), and because of my main cha...

Re: Theme relationship tool

Thanks, Chris. Yes, having this has REALLY helped me see relationships. It also made clear in this particular storyform how important the symptom/response pair of reaction/proaction are!

Theme relationship tool

Hi everyone, I realized that one thing I was lacking was a visual tool for seeing how the thematic variations related to one another across throughlines, so as a software programmer I decided to build it myself. I set it up with the values for the story I'm currently working on. But I'm thinking if ...

Re: Theme Browser v.s Plot Sequence Report

Well, I did see a post from Chris here somewhere (I looked for it, but the search engine on this site is not very helpful) where he explains this in more detail. Hopefully he will chime in here again and can direct you to it. I was also very confused at first when I saw the "mismatched" th...

Re: Theme Browser v.s Plot Sequence Report

That is how Dramatica helps you identify where thematic conflict lies.

Take a look at this from the Dramatica Website:

Be-er vs. Do-er question

Hi Chris, I'm pretty satisfied that I have reached the one storyform that I need for my story. Everything makes pretty good sense at this point. However, I was just experimenting with the story engine, just to see if other variations made more sense to me. If you'll look at the attached screen shot ...

how to explore impulsive responses in terms of Enlightenment

Dramatica has assigned Impulsive Responses to the OS Signpost 1 -- which is perfect (the King has been assassinated and everyone wants violent revenge). So, the Plot Sequence reports tells me In act one, "innate responses" (Impulsive Responses) is explored in terms of Wisdom, Experience, S...
