Re: How do you know when you have the right storyform?

Thanks, Jeff and Chris. Well, that worked quite well. It took me five storyforms, but I found it. I did what you suggested, Jeff, and turned off my "immutables," then I did what Chris suggested and started with what I knew best. That turned out to be the relationship between my MC and IC. ...

How do you know when you have the right storyform?

I've already written a (very) rough draft of my novel, so I'm going off of that and trying to decide my storyform. I started with one storyform but, after working on it for awhile, realized it was all wrong. Now I've been tinkering with the story engine and I feel like I almost have it, but not quit...

Re: statistics and targets

Hi Teresa,

Well, Dramatica isn't really a word processor. You don't write the novel within Dramatica. You plan it there.

What software were you looking at?

Re: Steadfast IC's Doubts

Thanks, Jeff. I certainly hope it'll be! Basically, the IC has all this faith in the MC's destiny -- and then it all turns out to have been a lie to manipulate the IC into helping the antagonist. The IC is crushed. The whole time the MC has been saying it was baloney, so he ends up being proven righ...

Re: Steadfast IC's Doubts

Cool, Jeff. Thanks! I just wanted to make sure.

I like the idea so much that I would do it anyway, but it's nice to know it still fits in with the Dramatica theory.

Steadfast IC's Doubts

I think I know the answer, but I'm interested in your thoughts: Can a Steadfast Impact Character have doubts about her position? Perhaps even "lose the faith" for a time? Or does this go against her... um... Steadfast-iness? I have a story in which the whole reason the main character Chang...

Re: Character Element Confusion

So I've heard, Jeff -- Which is why last night I ordered Dramatica For Screenwriters off of Amazon. Hopefully it will help me as much as it did you.

Re: Antagonist as Guardian

You may create complex characters that have elements of an Antagonist and a Guardian. For example, you might have your character represent both Conscience (from a Guardian) and Prevent/Avoid (form an Antagonist). That way, the character tells everyone what they SHOULD be doing, all the while workin...

Re: Character Element Confusion

Thank you, Chris. That helps, too. I guess the freedom within the overall structure takes a little getting used to.

Re: Character Element Confusion

Thanks again, Sam. It surely seems like it's supposed to work that way. Maybe when Chris gets a chance he can tell us if we're totally off-base. For now, I'm going to go torment some characters...

Re: Humor

Seems to me, Jeff, that the introduction is a perfect opportunity to set the mood. If the piece is going to be predominantely dark, the intro should probably be very somber and without much humor. I mean, I'm sure some wit would be appreciated, but if readers are laughing out loud they're going to b...

Character Element Confusion

So, I'm diligently working on building my characters. I'm learning a lot about them, but I'm a little confused about something. When you select, say, the "Self-Awareness" element and look it up in the handy-dandy Dramatica Theory book it says: When a character possesses Self-Awareness he f...

Re: New User, Comment, & Secondary Plots

I just had a thought: I wonder if I should make Jill the IC of the secondary story I was thinking of as "hers." I could elevate her sidekick (we'll call him Bob) to Main Character status, and have her be Bob's Impact Character, just like she is for the MC's throughline. She does make Bob c...

Re: New User, Comment, & Secondary Plots

Hi Chris, thanks for your response. Those links are very helpful. You're quite possibly right regarding the IC throughline. Maybe more details will help clarify (for myself, mostly): The IC (we'll call her Jill) is not alone in her story before she joins the MC's throughline. Jill has a sidekick, an...

Re: Has Anyone Here Tried this "Free Script Coverage" ?

Well -- having worked in Hollywood -- he's absolutely right that people doing script coverage have never sold a script. If they had, they wouldn't be writing coverage! Personally, I've always thought that paying for coverage is basically a scam. You're much better off just hammering out the most sol...

New User, Comment, & Secondary Plots

Hello all, I'm an experienced reality TV show writer (yes, it's all fake) and an aspiring novelist living (surviving?) in Los Angeles. I'm now a rookie Dramatica Pro user as well, having installed the software about a week and a half ago. First I have a comment, then a question. Here's the comment: ...
