Re: Writer's Block: An Interview with a Screenwriter
Knowing story structure helps. Another words knowing what you should be doing next helps. If you think that a story will "just emerge" then you will get writers block.
And then the old cliche "just write" helps. Just putting words on paper clears the mind.

Re: Order of Exposition
Two Options: ONE Watch "Trainspotting." You have a loop there that begins and ends at about the same stages. You'll see what I mean when you watch it. Use the same technique. TWO A story is rolled out in specific way - specific functions are meant to occur at various stages (see http://www...

Re: As Good As Star Wars
I'd like to recommend the book 'Hero With a Thousand Faces' by Joseph Campbell. George Lucas has often said he drew heavily on Campbell's work with the 'mythic archetypes' and 'the hero's journey' when making 'Star Wars.' True. But this makes it sound like Campbell and George were the first ones to...

Re: Tips in writing Screen play
Choose one of your short stories. You already have a beginning and end and a subconscious idea about your characters. Expand that. Brokeback Mountain was an expansion of a short story written by Annie Proulx. The same technique applies. The expansion follows a certain pattern ( see http://www.clicko...

Re: Storyforms of your favourite tv shows
hi all, has anyone tried to storyform a whole television series? season by season? I would love it if anyone could "do the dramatica breakdown" on my fav tv show - RDM's re-imagined Battlestar Galactica. Better still if Chris could give some comments. :D Each episode follows a pattern and...

Re: What don't people want to see?
Hi everyone, I'm new, and still trying to seel my first screenplay. But, I tried a method that I don't think was done before. I went to several of my friends, and writing boards I belong to and asked "What don't you want to see in a horror movie?" I got some real good information, but has...

Watch "Raging Bull" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid."
See how they use montage etc to do this.

Re: Constantly Changing Scenes!
Again, you don't understand story structure (you don't know how a story should be laid out beginning to end). Which is why you keep changing scenes etc. Because you don't know where to go, you constantly keep going over the same ground. Again, for structure, I refer you to http://www.clickok.co.uk/i...

Re: What to do with the 60,000 words I have already?
Usually, when patients suffer from "several manuscripts in process" it is a result of lack of a)understanding story structure and b) discipline. When I was young and wanted to be a dancer, my mother told me that dancing is not about freedom, it is about discipline. It is the same with writ...

Re: Positive and Negative Polarites
If your story does not return to a State of Perfection, it will not be deemed "an unexpected climax," more likely "what! finish that damn story!" It will not even go into production. You are not being "innovative" and "original." Suggest you get your head arou...

Re: Sub-Plots
Subplots are allies' and enemies' challenges that undergo the process of resolution. They follow the same path of resolution as the hero's / main character's path. You can relate it to sitcom (teh A-story, the B-story etc). So give them more challenges. Depth is achieved by giving the characters mul...

Re: How many characters should my screenplay have?
There is technically no limit BUT: A good story structure involves a certain process and a number of related functions (related to archetypes). Normally, you keep the story clean by assigning multiple functions to a small group of characters. Once you have the story outlined well, you can then distr...

Re: HELP WITH TIMELINE
See how it's done in: a) Raging Bull and b) Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid etc. Same technique. There's also a good example of progression / transformation in Scarface. Probably heresy to say this on a site sponsored by Movie Magic, but a good source for structure and this sort of thing is Kal B...

Re: Templates
What is required (for spam prevention) is a board where admins can see a list of posts everyday and delete individual ones.
Also, the standard "no URLs until you have made X number of posts etc."
Not aware of any technology that incorporates all these.
